What’s Included in a Typical Fume Cupboard Test?

A quick discussion with the user, if present, to discuss any concerns or questions they may have.
Face velocity measurements across the sash opening with individual, average, minimum and maximum values recorded and compared against requirements and previous tests.
Inspecting all elements of the fume cupboard for signs of damage, corrosion or safety risks.
Checking sash movement, alignment, balance and condition.
Checking the extract fan performance, motor noise, and vibration
Inspection of ductwork and extraction connections
Assessing and testing carbon and/or HEPA filters (if recirculating)
Checking the functionality and calibration of the airflow monitor / airflow alarm system.
Electrical tests.
Checking the conditions and air balance within the lab.
Checking of automatic fire suppression systems, automatic sash closers, water and gas services etc.
Affixing a test card to the fume cupboard with the latest test results.
Filling out of the LEV logbook if present.
Immediately notifying the user / lab manager of any failures or concerns identified during the tests and discussing potential remedial work.
Adjustment of airflow where required.
Preventative maintenance such as lubrication of the sash and recalibration of the airflow monitor.
Issuing a detailed test report (usually within 48 hours).

At the time of the test, any faults or safety concerns are brought to the attention of the fume cupboard user/lab manager and detailed within our reports. Where relevant, we quickly follow up with a quotation to carry out the necessary remedial work and revalidation.

Compliance and Legal Responsibilities

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, employers must ensure that local exhaust ventilation systems, including fume cupboards, are maintained in an efficient state, in good working order and in good repair. This includes a statutory requirement to test fume cupboards at least once every 14 months — or more frequently depending on use or internal policy.
